I recently made a new fun journal to just paint, journal and play in. Here is the first layout in my journal. It was inspired by the Starthmore artisit workshops. Here is a link for the workshops:

The girl is a stencil but I did do some painting and drawing over the stencil. The journaling was simple but I know the meaning behind it. It was too personal to share even in my journal but was a great way for me to have therapy through art. You can click on the image to get a closer look.

I made all the necklaces in the favorite color of the person I gave it too. I hope they enjoy them!

2nd Saturday Altered Book Club Christmas Party

We had our 2nd Saturday Altered Book Club meeting at Jean's lovely Victorian Home that was built in the 1800's. Here is Jean about to open her gift. The gifts were hand made for the person whose name we drew.

Jean's gifts were from Karin and they are victorian hangie dangies and one of the vintage pictures is of her Grandfather.

Karin's gift was a beautiful vintage book that had the pages cut out to reveal a hiding place for treasures. Pam did put some treasures in the book for her.

Cindy opened Dicki's gift from Charlotte because even though Dicki was not there, of course we wanted to see it!

I opened this present for Dorothy since she was not there. I made this one since I know Dorothy loves bling!

Sewn Book Binding turtorial

I found a book at the Library on book binding and I wanted to do a book like this. I love the way the book lays flat after you do this type of binding.
The book is Adventures in Book Binding by Jeannine Stein. This is a photo from the book showing the kind of binding that I wanted to do. Her book is made of polomyer clay but my book is just an old book cover I cut off of a used book with an exacto knife.
Here are the supplies if you'd like to do this technique:

Supplies:
One used hardback book at least ¼" to ½" larger than your signatures – You will cut the front and back covers off of a used book with an Exacto knife. Then you can finish your book covers anyway that you like but it is easier if you do it before you bind your book not after you bind your book like I did mine.
As many sheets of Watercolor paper as you would like (in any size) - folded in half to make your signatures – Use one of the signatures for a punch template - I used 11 pieces of 9"x12" watercolor paper folded in half to make 11 signatures.
Waxed thread - cut two pieces 36" long
Large eyed needle – blunt needles would be good and safer for your fingers
Hole punch that will reach in a long way, hole drill, or a pokey tool like I used – I think the hole drill with a small setting for the hole would be the best tool for the job
Two 5/8 x6" pieces of sturdy leather
PVA or Ultimate glue
Either Two or four decorative brads – Your choice.

This is a picture from the book showing the book binding technique.

This is my old book cover that I cut off of an old used book and cover with Anaglypta wallpaper. Anaglyta wallpaper is embossed wallpaper that you can paint over.

I left the other side of the cover like this. You can cover it later with decorative paper or just glue it to the first and last pages like I did mine. I left it like this because there will be a brad going through the cover.

This is the two leather staps but to 5/8 x 6 inchies.

This is the eleven 9x12" watercolor papers that folded in half to make my signatures. My signatures are only single folded sheets. Her signatures were thicked in her examples because she used three papers per signature. You can do whatever you wish with the size and thickness of your signatures. Just makes sure the book covers that you use are slightly larger than your signatures.

Use one of the signatures for a signature punching template. Measure 1/4" from the top and bottom of the fold and make with a small pencil mark.

Place the leather piece on the inside of each mark and make a mark on the other side of the leather pieces.

This is the way the inside of your punching template should look after you have marked it.

Don't make the marks too close to the leather or your stitches will be bunched up.

Punch holes in the folds of the template. I did this with a little pokey tool that I handmade but after doing the book I think it would be better to punch them with a long reach punch or a screw type hole punch. Use the template to punch all the holes in all of your signatures.

I used this heavy decorative thread because Iliked the look of the thread but I would not recommend it after doing my book because it was too large for a needle and I had to use a dental floss threader. This made my book much harder to do that is I had just used waxed thread and a blunt needle.

Enter the last hole from the bottom of the last signature.

Leave a 3" tail inside the signature.

Cross over the leather piece on the outside and enter the top hole of the signature from the outside.

Tie the thread into a double knot at the top hole and leave the three inch tail to be trimmed later. Exit the top hole from inside the signature.

Pick up the next signature and since you last left the top hold, you will enter the top hole of the next signature from the outside.

Enter the second signature from the bottom hole on the inside.

Place the leather piece across the edge of the signature centering it.

Enter the top hole from the outside of the second signature over the leather piece. Then exit the bottom hole on the inside. You would pick up the next signature and enter the bottom hole.

Continue sewing all of the bottom row of signatures in the same manner until all of the signatures are sewn together.

When all the signatures are sewn and the needle is on the inside of the last signature, knot the thread by bringing the needle under the stitch until the thread forms a single loop.

Bring the needle through the loop and tighten, pulling downward to form a knot.

Make one more loop to form one more knot to make a double knot. Trim the thread to 1/4".

Go back and trim the thread in the first signature to 1/4" also.

Now the bottom row of stitching is done. Be sure the leather is centered under the stitching with the same amount of leather showing on the front and back sides of the signatures.

The top rows of the signatures are sewn in the same manner and then the leather is centered again.

Lay the front cover on top of the signature with a slight overlap in the back and determine where you want the holes to be drilled for the brads.

Mark the place where the first hole should be drilled and use a ruler to mark the next hole in order to keep the holes straight.

Take the cover off of the signatures and use a mat under your covers if you are using an anywhere punch like I did to punch your holes.

I punched the back covers in the same manner.

I decided to cut the leather into points just as the author of the book did and I used a ruler the mark my leather in order to keep it about the same size when I trimmed it.

I trimmed the leather on both sides of the book.

I decided to just glue the first and last page to the covers instead of covering them on the inside with decorative papers because I liked the way it looked.

I did this book when I had a bunch of girls at my house for a girls night out. Roxanna did all of the photos and helped with support as we tried to figure out the directions and what photos we needed to show in order to have this turtorial. Thanks to all the girls for all of their support and help.

I finished my book after it was put together but before I glued the first and last pages to the covers. It is much easier to do this before you put your book together!

This is my finished book. I decided to paint it red and then was unhappy because it was too bright when it dried. So I then added a coat of oak glaze and wiped some of it off. I liked this look and after it dried I added a spray sealer to protect it.

Then I found an old frame that was green and sprayed it with the dark bronze Maya mist to give it a rusty look. I also sealed the frame with a spray sealer. Then I found some fun paper and letters and glued them inside the frame. I used beads and watch parts to give it a really fun look and used Glossy accents over them.

Halloween book

This is the front of the Halloween book that we did at the beach. The book is an 8x8 size. The silver decorations on the left are a headband that I found at the Dollar Tree. The books we did were all different. Mine has more of a spooky Halloween look. I used a Tim Holtz clip and wired and glued a spooky hand to the clip and added a spider sticker. The Halloween ticket is a Tim Holtz stamp. The booklet is inside of a slide which had a skull on a stickpin. The paper that are Halloween papers were in a pack of Fall and Halloween papers and the name of the company that made them is lost because the front cover was thrown away before I remembered to look at the name of it.

These are the mats behind the cat on page one. The old hag is a digital graphic and the stamp of the moon is an Inkadinkado stamp. I will use the back of the mats for pictures of us at the beach.

Fall Leaves Card

It has been so long since I've posted because our lives have been crazy busy! Anybody miss reading my new posts? Well, I've missed being here to post. But next week I go to the beach with girlfriends. Ah, maybe then I'll get some new art done and do some more posting! But I do have something new that I made. My friend, Diann did a make and take on my online art group, An Affair with Art better know to us as AAWA. She did a beautiful Fall leaves card and challenged us to do variation of it. So here is my Fall leaves card. I think you can click on it if you want to see it up close.

Several people will be getting it as a birthday card. I love that we had a card for our monthly make and take. I hope we get more cards for our online make and takes because I love the inspiration as I send out birthday cards every month!

This is a series of leaf inchies for AAWA (my online art group). They are having a mingle for inchies with a fall theme. I had to do 4. The last one was printed on a plank printed paper and that is why the black line is there. I was trying to use printed papers with a fall type theme.

Great weekend with friends

I just got back from a trip with friends. My friend, Claudia and I went to see our friend. Diane in Raleigh, NC. We had a wonderful time. Our other friend, Diann joined us on Monday and we had a wonderful time creating. Here are some of the things that we did.

This was a 5x7 inch picture that my friend, Diann gave me for the cat lottery that I won this month in our online art group.

This necklace really did not scan very well but this is another project that Diane taught us. It is a necklace made from a sticker believe it or not that has glossy accents on it and the center is the top of a spoon filled with all sorts of treasures.

I have one more necklace which is the bottom of the spoon but I'll have to find it as I unpack.

Fish pond in the Garden

This is an ATC that I made for our local altered book club. The theme was Gardens for this ATC and it has a background that was sprayed with different colors of distress inks. Then the fish was stenciled on it. It was layered with stamps, guesso, napkins, more ink over the quote and doodles. The quote is by William Shakespear.
I wanted it to look like the view from the pond that the fish sees of the garden.
I hope Linda likes it!

Birthday card for friend's mom

My friend Barbara's mom is having her 97th Birthday and I made her this wild birthday card. She loves Sunflowers. I saw a similar birthday card in an old issue of Stamper's Sampler magazine. The card in the magazine had the added piece where the eyelets are and I wanted to try this technique. I had the wild printed paper that is cut on the diagonal and thought she might enjoy this paper because it is so happy and wild. I hope she enjoys it and has a very happy birthday.

This is my ATC for TMTA where the theme is transparent for this week. The main ATC is a piece of plastic that was in my recycled treasures drawer. The page behind it is an old farmers almanac page. The flower is my favorite stamp stamped with Staz-on ink on top of the plastic. The colors on the plastic are alcohol inks.

This inchie is for Every Inchie Monday and I think of these soft mix of colors when I think of Sunsets. We have beautiful sunsets here and I always love to see what colors we will have as it always seems to be different every day.

chicken for art lottery in my altered book club

We have been doing a lottery in our altered book club with the recipient telling us what theme they wanted. Dickie's theme was chickens. I got my inspiration from a coater that I have with a chicken on it. Here is my 8 1/2 x 11 flat canvas with my chicken drawn and water colored on the canvas. I put some ribon on the back of the canvas that she can hang it with or she can remove the ribbon and hang it however she likes. Hope she likes her chicken!

I've got a new laptop and finally back to posting art again. Here are 2 pieces for my friend, Jeri. The Scarlet Paige one is for her Grandmother's book and the America one if for the lottery in our online art group, An Affair With Art, that she won this month. Whoever wins the lottery picks something that she'd like the girls to do for her. Jeri's theme was a 4th of July theme. It just might be because her birthday is very close to the 4th. I hope she enjoys both and I hope she has a very Happy Birthday. A group of us girls from South Carolina will be flying to Texas in July very soon to go to the Artfull Gathering that our group has every year. We are so excited and cannot wait!

Projects that I am finally getting to

I am trying to clean up my art room and do some projects that are everywhere in my room. These are projects that I've just been itching to get to and haven't had the time.

This is some earring that I made from beads that were a gift to me from Elaine in my online art group. I won them in Elaine's blog candy and have just been dying to use these beads. There are more wonderful beads in the bag that she sent me and I'll share as I make something with them.
A scan just shows everything that you miss and I will close up that earring!

This is a charm braclet that is made from charms that my online art group, an affair with art made. The butterfly charms are shrinky dink charms that I made. They are different than the charms that I made for this swap but I put those charm in that really special place. You know that place that you cannot remember where it's at. They will show up at some point but I had two extra charms that I made for another swap at our local altered book club.

This is my inchie for this week for Every Inchie Monday where the theme is solitude. I spent some time alone resting at my Son and Daughter-in-law's house and they have wonderful big, old trees. It was so leafy and cool and restful so I decided to do a leaf for my inchie. It is stamped with a real leaf with white paint and I wrote the word with my caligraphy pen.

The butterfly is cut out of shrinky Dink material with a Quickutz layered die. Then I colored the butterfly with alcohol inks. The chipboard inchie is also colored with alcohol inks.

Art for my Altered Book Club

This is a necklace that I made for a my friend, Linda in my Altered book club. We have a lottery where we do something for one of the members and they choose the theme. Linda's theme was butterflies. The butterfly in this necklace is a Shrinky Dink charm. It is not ink jet Shrinky Dinks - just the regular Shrinky Dinks. I stamped with Staz-on ink. I tried coloring the butterfly and did not like it and decided to leave it as is and let the beads supply the color. The beads are wire wrapped. I didn't wrap them. They came that way from Big Lots! I just put them on split rings. I think it turned out great and Linda really liked it.

This is an altered book page that I made for Charlotte in our altered book club. This is a tip-in page that will be put into her book with heart shaped brads. It is sticky backed canvas.
The sticky side was up and I put old music sheets that were torn on the sticky side and left some spaces. Then I put white tissue over that and added Royal Coat mat finish which is like Mod Podge that you can buy at Walmart. I put sticky back canvas into my printer to add the quotes and I sewed around the hearts. I also used Royal Coat to add music paper to the back of the canvas and add more quotes.

I made some earrings today and I made one pair for my friend, Diann who has gifted me with beautful earrings more than once. I thought that I would let Diann pick the pair that she likes best. It's hard to tell but the one on top is green. You can click on the picture to see them better.

I could not wait to get my hands on some ink jet Shinky Dinks but my Michaels was out until last week. I downloaded all the pictures and made all the charms. My online art group is having a charm swap so they were perfect for that plus I made myself a braclet. I still need to go back to the store and get a toggle closure for my braclet but I love it!

TMTA - ATC in the shape of a house

This is my ATC for TMTA (Think Monday - Think ATC). The girl is a magazine picture. I dry brushed over her and then drew over her and then dry brushed again so that she kind of looks ghostly. I wanted her to look like a girl who wants to go home but that gate is not open to her.

2 RAKs and a heart tag

Yesterday, I received two wonderful RAKs. An RAK is a random act of kindness sent to someone. In this case it was two acts of kindness sent to me. The first one was from Diann in North Carolina. It is a pair of beautiful earrings.

The second one was from another Diane in North Carolina. They don't know each other but they live very close to one another and they both make beautiful artwork! This was was a beautiful little tag with all kinds of beads on it.

And I have been busy today too. I made a metal tag with another metal tag on top if it that says on the inside, "Be careful what you set your heart on, for it will surely be yours." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson. The tag came from our online art group's junque mingle. Can you believe that? It was a mustard yellow tag and I turned it into a silver and red tag with black heart stamps. It is for our online art group, AAWA's (An Affair With Art) lottery for February where the theme is hearts. This tag will go to Jean. The square heart piece on top can even be taken off the tag and worn as jewelery if Jean would like to. I hope she enjoys it!

Valentine cards

These are two Valentine cards made by my 3 year old grandson. He water colored the squares and cut out the hearts with my Cuttlebug. He has a very special message inside for two very special people in his life which he told me to write for him on the computer. I hope they enjoy the cards! I think he did a great job!

TMTA- Cool Fruit

This is my ATC for Think Monday - Think ATC's theme for this week which is cool fruit. The girl is a magazine picture that was glued onto a playing card. Then I dry brushed gesso lightly over the picture. Then I drew with a permanent pen and water colored over her. She has a cherry necklace drawn on and a stamped, embossed and watercolored blackberry that was cut out and put into her hand. You might think that she would be holding a phone but it's a real blackberry!

Thinking about love - new 4x4 and altered book pages

This is for a friend's altered book in my altered book club. Her theme for her book is anything goes so I was in the mood to do Something with hearts. The hearts were cut out with my Cricut with the Paper Lace cartridge.

This is a 4x4 that I did for a Valentine swap for my online art group. As you can tell, the book inspired this 4x4.

Handmade christmas gifties

This is the back of a quilt that my friend Janet gave me for a Christmas gift.

She always puts antique linens on the back of her quilts for her name tags.

I just had to show you her underwear! Isn't that just too cute?

Polly (who is 90 years young and still quilting!), Lynn, me, Thea and Ellen with our quilt gifts from Janet.

The neck pancho is from Ellen. It keeps your neck warm when you have coats that don't quit meet and expose your neck area to the cold.

I am a very lucky girl to have such crafty friends. These are handmade gifts from some of my quilting friends. I don't quilt much anymore so I made them these angel earrings and a handmade Christmas ornament which I forgot to get a picture of.

This is a tea cozy made by Ellen too and this is a table runner that Polly made.

There were lots of other little gifties and a good meal at Ellen's house with a dish that each of us brought. It was a wonderful friends day!

Hot pink jewelery

These are two pieces of jewelery that I have made for some friends.

This braclet on the white background was for my friend Claudia. She won the monthly lottery that we do in our local altered book club. Her theme was birds. So I made this pink braclet with a bird for her.

Then I got the bright idea to do the braclet on the black background for Shelly Rae who won the monthly lottery in our online art group. She loves hot pink. After I made the braclet for her, I decided that she needed some earrings to go with it. I hope you enjoy it, Shelly Rae. I think it will be perfect for next month and for a girl that loves hot pink.

Snow again

We had snow again today. This is how it looked out of my front door today.
Some of upstate South Carolina had as much as a foot of snow but we just had about 5 inches of snow. The bad part is that now it is sleeting and should be sleeting all night which will make all of this a sheet of ice. We will be staying home tomorrow because of the icy weather.

Day 9 - Twelve Days of Christmas

This day is the day that I show the gifties that I made for the 12 days of Christmas. They are a paper quilled snowflake and a Christmas banner that I made with my Cricut.

The ribbons on the Noel banner are adjustable so that it will hopefully fit the space that you put it in. That means that the bunches of ribbons on the ends slide up and down. I put mine on my mantel.

drawing and watercoloring

These are two watercolors that I've done with my Fall group at my church. Something about being with these artists has challenged me to do things that I've never done before. The first design with the dove was designed on my computer from graphics that I had on some programs. I drew the circle with a circle that I had and freehand drew the dove. Then I had all kinds of fun putting the watercolors on.

The second one was done from a black and white drawing book of flowers that I have. I looked at the drawing of these lilies and drew it freehand. I call these ditch lilies because they grow wild in the ditches here where there was once an old home where someone originally planted the bulbs. They are actually day lilies.

I plan to add this verse to this drawing:

"Consider the lilies how they grow: They toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Soloman in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Luke 12:27

gifts for some special people

The wreath was a present that I made for my Sister for her birthday. The flowers are from my Mom's hydrangea bush and from my friend, Bren's bushes. I added a pretty blue ribbon after this picture was taken. I thought those pretty blooms needed to be enjoyed and they were already 95 percent dried.

The Shadow box is shown opened and closed. The inside picture was made from materials that I left out all winter in the elements for an erosion bundle. The art supplies are left out in the weater to see what the elements would do to the art supplies. I also showed the art supplies as they looked when they came out of the bundle. Not all of the materials were used so I may make another piece of art from them. The cowgirl was printed on the library card.

The shadowbox will be shown at my local altered book club for a project we were supposed to do. We were told to make a piece of hanging art.

Then I will give this shadow box to a special friend that wishes she were a cowgirl. So this project helped me do art from the erosion bundle, art for my altered book club project, and make a gift for a friend. Now don't you just love it when you can kill three birds with one stone?

This is a new altered book that I am starting for my altered book club, Second Saturday Altered Book Club. I purchased the book from my friend, Autumn. I did the first layout about Carrie Bradshaw in Sex & the City.

I will tell the girls to do layouts about girls and their shoes. I can think of Cinderella and Dorthy and the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz. Please do tell me in your comments if you can think of a girl and her shoes. I'm sure the girls in Altered Book Club would love suggestions.

corner bookmark swap

These are corner bookmarks that I made for a swap for my art group (AAWA - An Affair with Art). They are 4" from the top to the bottom of each end and then rounded with decorative scissors. They have an actual envelope corner on the inside so that they will slide over a book page. I thought that a Summer escape theme might be nice.
